Reporting to the Pro Bono Counsel, the Pro Bono Coordinator extends the reach and effectiveness of the Pro Bono department which has approximately 500-1500 active matters. The primary responsibilities include:
Identify and arrange matches between attorneys and opportunities using internal data. Launch internal Pro Bono survey and analyze the results. Solicit attorney interest by distributing opportunity lists. Engage Pro Bono Counsel if necessary to help attorneys refine preferences
Maintain staff-level relationships with the programs that refer matters; reach out to those contacts for matters where a lawyer has a specific interest. If no program provides what we need, research other programs
Research new matters to determine eligibility and order conflict searches. Escalate possible conflict issues to the Pro Bono Counsel. In conjunction with the Pro Bono Counsel, evaluate whether we have or can develop the requisite expertise to staff the matter. Draft engagement letters tailored to pro bono circumstances
Make introduction with new attorneys to the firm; inform them of the firm's pro bono requirements; monitor the status of matters to ensure they are on schedule or completed; reassign matters when attorney departs firm
Be a resource for attorneys and maintain knowledge of matters; organize forms, templates and links to training materials; maintain a catalogue of experience so attorneys can be directed to others who handled similar matters
Work with Pro Bono Counsel and administrative departments to publicize the program; work with Legal Personnel to produce recruiting materials for OCI; work with Marketing to identify and develop internal/external public relations; update exiting pro bono portal to distribute information
Track on a monthly basis pro bono status vs. goals; produce external reports for PBI, AmLaw, Vault, NALP, NYSBA and other bars, etc
Work with Pro Bono Counsel and Professional Development to arrange 3-4 trainings a year held at our offices. Work with other support staff to coordinate annual events such as the Pro Bono Awards, Milbank in the Park, etc
Other responsibilities as they may be assigned from time-to-time
Education and Experience:
A law degree and admission to the NYS Bar strongly preferred
A minimum of 2 years' experience in a law firm or non-profit organization
Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office including advanced-level Excel skills
Must have strong interpersonal skills, organization, attention to detail, multi-tasking, prioritization, analytical and project management skills
Must be a self-starter with an ability to initiate tasks on own as well as be a team-player
Must be flexible and available to work beyond normal business hours on a regular basis to address the needs of the department including attending evening meetings/trainings
