The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Paralegal. The Board of Regents is the statutory governing body for the University of Iowa (which includes the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics), Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. The Board's staff offices are located in Urbandale Iowa.
The Board Office Paralegal will perform paralegal work and provide related administrative support to the Board Office staff, and will work under the general direction of the Board Counsel and the Associate Counsel/Director of Human Resources. Duties include legal research, preparation of memoranda and legal documents, and administrative and general office support. The successful candidate will be required to coordinate and balance overload work with other administrative staff.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: Performs paralegal work of varying scope and complexity; performs related administrative support work as required.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Prepares tentative drafts, letters, memoranda and legal documents for use in the preparation of opinions, reports, briefs, contracts, and other papers or legal documents. 2. Prepares drafts of pleadings, motions and discovery documents in connection with cases; attends hearings as requested. 3. Assists in the preparation of drafts of findings of fact, conclusions of law and orders based on the evidentiary record. 4. Conducts investigations of limited scope to obtain facts; studies legal precedents and prepares recommendations. 5. Conducts legal research in various areas as assigned. Obtains legal reference materials and files legal documents. 6. Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Direction provided by the Board Counsel and the Associate Counsel/Director of Human Resources.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Assists in balancing overload work and coordinating work schedules of other staff and may supervise work of other staff when serving as leader of project team.

Graduation from an accredited paralegal program; or experience equal to two years of full-time work as a paralegal or a similar support capacity under the supervision of a practicing attorney.
Must demonstrate ability to handle multiple projects, possess ability to utilize legal research resources and tools at a high level, adapt to changing environments, possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be familiar with computerized office applications.
