The Assistant Dean of Admissions is responsible for the planning and execution of recruiting and selection activities to enroll a class of approximately 300 students. The position directs the JD Admissions team in strengthening the reputation and distinctive culture of the Berkeley Law by promoting the program and brand throughout the US and internationally; selecting and yielding a talented and diverse class of students; and delivering a high level of customer service through our personal attention and responsiveness. The JD Program has developed one of the most selective student profiles in the world, while also ensuring a strong fit with our program throughout the outreach, selection and yield process.
This position is also responsible for supervision of professional admissions staff; and the planning, development and implementation of short- and long-term goals, which will enhance the delivery of quality services for students.
Involves developing and implementing programs for student outreach, recruitment, and admissions for the Berkeley campus and/or school/college/department within appropriate constituents and communities; and educating the public about admissions requirements, policies, and processes.
Develops, interprets, and administers an admissions and/or recruitment program supporting Berkeley Law JD graduate degree program and makes decision on 5000-8000 J.D. applications annually.
Specifically: • Develop annual admissions plan for the JD program. Oversee admissions processes and procedures, including the design of the online application and database • Evaluate and select students for Law including reading/reviewing applications for admission, providing a written assessment of each applicant, making final admissions decisions, and determining the composition of the JD classes • Analyze and report on admissions statistics throughout admissions cycle and in annual reports to the administration and faculty • Counsel prospective applicants regarding admissions requirements, JD programs, and preparations for legal study; convert qualified candidates to applications and, ultimately, admitted students to enrollees • Provide direction on scholarship and loan strategy; serve on scholarship committees • Responsible for maintaining and enhancing systems that support the program
Represent admissions externally and internally: • Develop and maintain relationships with students and alumni; • Work closely with Marketing, Career Services, Advancement, and Financial Aid, and Student Services, the Dean and others to achieve recruitment and admissions goals • Build on existing ties between faculty, students, and alumni and outside firms and organizations to help identify and recruit potential students and to strengthen overall relationships between these companies and the school • Stay closely connected with counterparts from other law schools and resources to share leads, ideas, and best practices • Provides direction to subordinate professional and support staff • Provides guidance and assistance to subordinates on must complex issues • Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff • Responsible for administering the budget for managed function• Experience managing/leading teams • Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation • Significant knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis procedures, and systems necessary for working with technical staff to develop effective data management and evaluation systems • Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of the University and a law school as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission • Significant knowledge of UC Berkeley Colleges, Schools and departmental transfer policies • Significant knowledge regarding UC Berkeley's Colleges/schools general education policies and requisite transfer preparation • Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice • Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service and professionalism • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, public relations • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups in a busy environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously • Experience in recruiting, outreach and/or career services • Knowledge of academic business programs • Successful completion of a background check required • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent of experience • 3-5 years of significant management experience in higher education or related field
