The Senior Director of Legal Recruitment, together with the Chief Legal Talent Officer and under the direction of the firm’s Managing Directors, will lead the firm’s talent acquisition strategy and help promote the firm’s brand in the legal marketplace as a modern, vibrant client-centric firm and a dynamic place to practice law. This person will contribute to the success of the firm by sourcing, attracting and recruiting highly-talented and diverse partners to meet the current and future business needs of the firm. This person will align the firm’s talent acquisition strategy and resources with the firm’s business growth goals, while leading and developing legal recruitment team members who will enthusiastically execute and support the strategy.
This person will collaborate with the firm’s leadership, its directors and the Chief Business Growth Officer on lateral partner recruitment needs, candidate profiles, strategic recruitment initiatives and integration.
This position can be based in either the New York or Boston office. Frequent interoffice travel required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Devise and implement an innovative strategy, efficient processes and clear protocol for sourcing, attracting, hiring and integrating lateral partner candidates as a critical component of the firm’s execution of its growth strategy across each of the firm’s four major practice groups;
Work with practice group leaders and growth initiative leaders regarding the strategic identification and development of lateral partner candidate pipelines, and assessment of senior-level candidate fit and strengths (including assessment of financial data provided by candidates);
Develop and maintain market intelligence for the firm, searching for talent in identified key markets, and developing alerts to personnel or business changes in competitive firms or regarding potential lateral opportunities;
Stay abreast of trends in the industry and marketplace and maintain up-to-date knowledge of recruiting opportunities by conducting and overseeing ongoing research and market canvassing to identify potential candidates based on developments at their current firm, and report on lateral hiring trends and data;
Lead the lateral partner orientation and integration process in collaboration with the Chief Legal Talent Officer, liaising with the Chief Business Growth Officer to ensure a smooth entry and successful integration of incoming partners;
Interface directly with headhunters and director candidates as the initial firm ambassador, clearly articulating the firm’s interests, strategic focus, and growth strategy;
Execute on the firm’s strategic growth initiatives and practice group partner hiring needs in collaboration with initiative and practice group leaders;
Collaborate with practice groups to efficiently navigate candidates through the firm’s recruiting and integration process;
Oversee the firm’s internal due diligence processes, coordinating the efforts of multiple departments to ensure that all of the firm’s vetting process steps are successfully and timely implemented;
Collaborate with the Chief Legal Talent Officer and the Diversity Committee to develop metrics and analyze data regarding diversity, recruiting, retention and related market trends;
Stay informed about recruiting innovations and technology to ensure that recruitment, selection, onboarding, sourcing and pre-screening technologies support the firm’s competitiveness in the market for top talent, are in compliance with policy and initiatives, and meet all applicable legal requirements;
Monitor the ongoing success of lateral hires and identify continuous improvement opportunities for lateral integration;
Ensure relevant processes and tools are in place to report and measure key talent acquisition success metrics and regularly communicate the effectiveness and efficiency of the talent acquisition function;
Negotiate search firm agreements and manage search firm relationships;
Develop and manage Legal Recruitment budget, monthly tracking and quarterly forecasting;
Manage Legal Recruitment team through coaching and development of team members; and
Contribute to a team culture that focuses on continuous improvement and innovation.
Minimum of eight (8) years direct experience with partner or executive-level lateral hiring in a law firm or other professional services firm;
Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. or other graduate degree preferred;
Exceptional organization skills, results-oriented with proven track record of consistent follow through and ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and smoothly and accomplish goals in a fast-paced, professional services environment;
Polished communication, interpersonal and executive functioning skills with demonstrated ability to interact with and gain the confidence of sophisticated, highly educated professionals;
Demonstrably high level understanding of the business of law, industry trends and recruiting best practices;
Demonstrable thoughtfulness, creativity, judgment and general business acumen, strategic mindset and hands-on approach;
Sophisticated and strategic research skills to identify lateral partner candidates;
Excellent analytic skills to identify trends in firm data and the legal industry, to vet lateral candidates, and evaluate financial data and parameters provided by candidates;
