We are currently seeking a full-time Professional Development Manager in our Washington D.C. office. The Professional Development Manager is charged with primary oversight and administration of attorney training and development programs. The position will also be responsible for specialized research and benchmarking, budgeting, and the tracking of firm data at various levels.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Evaluate and assess all aspects of professional development programs, including analysis of development opportunities, course congruency and consistency, and other training resources. Recommends future learning and development programs.
Oversee the development and implementation of firm-wide and practice group-specific learning and development opportunities for lawyers.
Work closely with the firm’s Marketing Department to develop business development trainings and programs.
Manage all aspects of the non-partner attorneys’ review and compensation process in coordination with the Lawyer Personnel Committee (“LPC”). The responsibilities include: setting up processes and forms in ViEval; collecting and circulating evaluation forms; scheduling practice group and LPC meetings; maintaining compensation charts; collaborate with Finance and HR to implement compensation and promotion changes; and drafting and circulating memoranda notifying attorneys of new compensation and promotion changes. Manage the six-month review process for all new hires.
Develop and implement learning and training opportunities for the firm’s Summer Program.
Support attorney orientation programs for new lateral hires, fall associates, and summer associates. Regularly assess orientation programs’ goals and develop new approaches as needed.
Develop and manage mentoring and coaching programs.
Provides guidance to CLE compliance process, maintenance of compliance files and completion of annual reports.
Coordinate new attorney admissions and compliance with local bar jurisdictions.
Actively participate in associate committees to support morale and retention initiatives.
Manage attorney departure and outplacement processes.
Support the onboarding and logistical integration of new hires.
Track attorney retention data and report on the results and trends to senior leadership, as requested.
Prepare annual professional development goals and budget.
Supervise support staff in executing administrative function associated with evaluation and compensation processes.
Train Talent Management team members in recruiting processes and best practices.
Participate in professional development groups and attend seminars and conferences to stay current on trends in the legal industry.
10-20% travel to other Thompson Hine offices.
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of professional development experience in a law firm setting. Must have a thorough understanding of recruiting processes and experience working with ViDesktop or a similar web-based recruiting and professional development tool. Must have excellent customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills. Candidate will also have superior judgement and discretion, and the ability to multi-task and work efficiently.
