Reports To: SVP, P&C Legal Commercial in Columbus, Ohio
Serves as lead counsel for Nationwide Indemnity. Supervises other attorneys on the legal team who manage environmental, toxic tort, construction defect and asbestos claims and litigation. Role also provides litigation support to Indemnity Reinsurance unit.
Provides services as lead counsel for Indemnity business unit.
Serves as legal counsel to Indemnity Loss Reserve Working Group (ILRWG), a multi-disciplinary group of Nationwide executives that sets claim and expense reserves for Indemnity.
Oversees and directs the delivery of insurance coverage opinions to constituent claim units, assists in developing defense strategies for complex litigation, including assisting with discovery responses and participating in mediations and arbitration proceedings.
Provides coverage and risk avoidance claims training and manages outside claims legal expense, through combination of audits, cost share agreements, selective case assignment and creative fee arrangements with outside counsel.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education/Certification/Licenses-Education: Law degree. BS/BA degree. Licensed to practice in the State of Illinois or Wisconsin.
Experience/Skills-Experience: 10-15 years practicing law with firm or in-house corporate legal department. Experience managing other attorneys.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
