Essential Functions: JOB PURPOSEUnder the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, this position provides legal counsel and representation of the University. Represents the University's legal interests in judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings. Provides counsel and advice to University schools, colleges and divisions and negotiates legal and transactional matters on behalf of the University. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSRepresent the University's legal interest in judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings. Develop appropriate strategy needed to defend and/or prosecute lawsuits. Conduct discovery. Prepare and present written briefs and oral argument. Review University contracts and leases. Act on behalf of, and negotiator for, the University in legal and business transactions. Consult with University administration regarding contracts, leases and other instruments. Assist in various transactional matters. Provide counsel and advice to University divisions, colleges and departments. Answer legal questions and resolve problems in order to prevent University violations of laws and to reduce the University's liability exposure.Serve on committees and task forces as assigned. Review and recommend modification of University policies and procedures.Perform related work as assigned.
Qualifications: EDUCATIONJuris Doctor. Knowledge of laws and regulations which affect educational institutions. Knowledge and understanding of university organizational structure, policy and procedures.Admissions to the Michigan Bar Association or the ability to become quickly admitted. Expertise in employment or labor law, tax or not-for-profit corporate legal issues strongly desired. EXPERIENCEA minimum of 5 years of experience as an attorney. Typically, incumbents have worked for a public agency handling civil and administrative legal matters. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESTechnical Knowledge - Admission to the Michigan Bar Association or the ability to become quickly admitted.Planning/Organizing Skills - Ability to prioritize and plan work activities, manage project team activities, develop strategies to achieve organizational goals.Collaboration - Foster collaborations across a wide range of activities including working collaboratively with individuals and groups to collectively meet common objectives.Project Management Skills - Strong organizational skills, ability to handle multiple tasks, and complete work within deadlines in a changing environment with multiple priorities.Communication Skills - Excellent oral and written communication skills.
