Immigration Program Manager (New Americans Initiative)
Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors
February 24, 2018
Full Time - Entry Level
Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors (NIJFON) is a faith-based ministry born out of the United Methodist Church whose mission is to provide free, high-quality immigration legal services and education and advocacy around immigration issues.
We hold immigration legal clinics throughout Northern Illinois, and we reach out to United Methodist Churches and their partners in Northern Illinois to offer opportunities for education around immigration issues that are either directly targeted to immigrants’ issues (like Know Your Rights trainings or information about administrative relief) or a broader analysis and context of immigration issues in the U.S. today. Finally, we develop leaders and provide opportunities for organizing and advocacy on immigration issues.
NIJFON is excited to continue to partner in the New Americans Initiative (“NAI”) – a state-funded initiative whose purpose it is to provide outreach, preparation, and legal services related to citizenship and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) (depending on the future of the program). We are seeking a full-time Program Manager to coordinate and implement the program. We seek an immigration attorney or someone with experience as an accredited representative or paralegal in preparing and filing N-400s, N-600s, I-765s, and I-821Ds. We seek someone who is a highly-motivated self-starter. This person will report to our Supervisory Attorney. We are looking to fill this position immediately.
Implement the New Americans Initiative program, which will be implemented from the hire date through June 2018 and be continued annually contingent upon state funding availability. NAI is currently in the state budget for the next fiscal year.
Conduct outreach in NIJFON service areas (Aurora, Buffalo Grove, Chicago, Crystal Lake, and Rockford) to notify the immigrant populations of the free citizenship and DACA services offered through NIJFON NAI
Work with existing NIJFON legal staff and volunteers to develop a program for citizenship and DACA services (if applicable) that will meet the following targets for the initial timeframe:
Prepare and file I-821D and related applications (if the DACA program continues)
The position is primarily based out of NIJFON’s main office in Chicago’s Loop, but it can be located elsewhere in Northern Illinois if preferred. The position includes travel to workshops throughout NIJFON’s service area, which includes Aurora, Buffalo Grove, Chicago – Logan Square, Crystal Lake, and Rockford (driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle is required; travel is reimbursed).
Experience as an accredited representative, attorney, or paralegal for a non-profit agency or law firm that filed citizenship and DACA cases is helpful
Familiarity with the urban, suburban, and rural Northern Illinois area populations, especially immigrant populations and immigrant-serving organizations
Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred; knowledge of Arabic, French, Polish, or other languages is helpful
Interested candidates should send their resume, cover letter, and a list of three professional references to firstname.lastname@example.org. The position is open until filled, and we are looking to hire someone as soon as possible.
Additional Salary Information: This is a salaried, full-time position, contingent upon the state of Illinois budget. The position will require some evening and weekend hours. Compensation is dependent upon experience; full benefits package is included.
