The property and casualty business is a growth engine for MetLife. This position impacts the Property & Casualty (“P&C”) companies’ bottom and top line results and assists in positioning them for the future, by providing strategic, proactive counsel on significant initiatives including the development and deployment of new digital products and platforms. The role supports both the companies’ profitable growth objectives and its risk management efforts. It is also a primary business liaison and assists in coordinating work-flow and allocating resources.
The Product & Distribution Practice Group Lead (“PGL”) reports to the Unit Manager and is the senior attorney responsible for coordinating all aspects of P&C product development and its omnichannel distribution model. This role is primarily responsible for providing specific, deep subject matter expertise and liaising with business partner teams. The incumbent will also coordinate with the Unit Manager and Corporate & Regulatory PGL to manage work-flow and allocate resources.
The responsibilities that are core to success in this role include:
Providing strategic and tactical thought leadership to business partners on how best to manage all aspects of P&C’s product development and omnichannel distribution model (including our in-house insurance agency; nonproprietary product offerings; and participation in the National Flood Insurance Program) and compliance with relevant state insurance laws and regulations.
Ensuring timely and effective communication to senior leaders as necessary on issues regarding organic growth initiatives.
Collaborating with the Unit Manager and Corporate & Regulatory PGL to delegate and manage work-flow and provide guidance to other lawyers in counseling relevant business partners.
Supporting the development of the unit members’ skills and legal expertise.
Providing feedback to Unit Manager on members of the unit, for the purposes of Performance Management.
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
JD and applicable state bar admission or in-house counsel registration required
Minimum of 10 years of legal experience that could be across various areas and that reflects a strong in-house record or demonstrated ability to succeed in-house.
Deep subject matter expertise in P&C products and distribution.
Proven track record of excellence in insurance and related laws and regulations.
Demonstrated strategic planning, analytical problem solving, project management and organizational skills, with a proven record of process improvement.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of building relationships and effective partnerships with business and legal colleagues.
Demonstrated the ability to present and communicate clearly, succinctly and persuasively to a variety of internal stakeholders.
Robust delegation skills and the ability to manage projects and deliver training.
