Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Center for Agricultural Law & Taxation at Iowa State University seeks applicants for a Staff Attorney. The Center provides timely, objective, unbiased information to producers, professionals and agribusinesses concerning the application of important developments in agricultural law and taxation (federal and state legal opinions of relevance, as well as legislative developments), and serves as a primary source of professional educational training in agricultural law and taxation.
The Staff Attorney is responsible for extensive legal research, analysis, writing, and speaking in support of the Center for Agricultural Law & Taxation and Center activities. Specific areas of focus include, but are not limited to, agricultural taxation, lease law, fence and property law, farm estate and transition planning, bankruptcy, environmental and natural resource law, regulatory law, antitrust and farm policy. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for staying informed and informing others on current agricultural law developments in Iowa and around the nation. This position will require some travel as the Staff Attorney will conduct and participate in general educational seminars and continuing education classes and workshops.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of individuals, internal and external to the university. The candidate will possess the ability to exercise sound judgment on challenging issues and perform tasks with professionalism, diligence and integrity. The ability to work independently on routine legal matters and to perform complex and accurate legal research and analysis is necessary.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. or other professional degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
*Preferably admitted to the Iowa Bar.
*Experience that demonstrates a strong understanding of farming and agricultural-related issues.
*Experience in writing and editing legal publications.
*Experience or course work in state income, federal income and/or estate taxation.
*Federal Income Tax Course completion.
*Public speaking experience.
*Experience as a judicial clerk or editing a law journal.
*Demonstrated interest in agricultural law.
*Demonstrated excellent academic credentials.
Three-year term position, from start date, with the possibility of renewal.
