OVERVIEW: The IT Manager/Network Engineer is responsible for the management of the IT Operations team, including direct supervision of the Network Administrator, Database Administrator and IT Developer and their respective responsibilities. Specifically, the IT Manager will oversee and direct the functions that maintain, develop and support the Firm’s technology infrastructure. This role will spend a significant amount of time coordinating and managing information technology projects designed to keep the Firm’s systems on the cutting edge. The IT Manager will report to the Director of Information Technology, but will be expected to spend the majority of his or her time working independently.
Leadership Responsibilities: Duties to entail acting as a leader within the IT group, influence of attorney and staff use of multiple technologies, helping to set strategies, and providing managerial back up to the IT Director.
Work with IT Director to develop long term strategic plans for Firm technology needs.
Assist IT Director, when needed, in all responsibilities pertaining to the Firm’s local and wide area network and attached devices and software.
Continually reviews new developments in industry hardware that may have applications to the firm's operations and, when appropriate, advises the IT Director of such developments and makes proposals regarding same.
Recommend new equipment or software packages.
Perform other duties as assigned by the IT Director, COO, or Executive Committee including but not limited to budget planning and technology presentations.
Managerial Responsibilities: IT Operations team oversight including management, evaluation and coaching of IT staff
Oversee functions that maintain, upgrade and administer the firm’s servers, computers, and communications network, including hardware and software devices and applications.
Responsible for the configuration, installation, and testing of network equipment, servers, desktops, laptops, and attached devices.
Serve as project manager for systems projects, including the planning, coordination and management of projects with little supervision.
Identify and define network and hardware problems and recommend and implement solutions using discretion and independent judgment.
Oversee troubleshooting and maintenance of firm hardware attached to the local and wide area networks.
Provide oversight, direction and guidance for the IT Operations group, troubleshooting and maintenance for servers, desktop, laptop, and network attached hardware to keep such hardware in a fully operational condition during working hours.
Directing technology consultants on significant IT projects and firm initiatives.
Server Virtualization Platforms and VDI
Networking and Core Microsoft server products such as Active Directory, SQL Server, Exchange and Systems Center
Windows desktop design, customization, implementation and support
Network infrastructure (LAN, WAN, Edge, Internet)
Mobile (Device, Application, Information, Experience) Management
Document & Email Management
Oversight of troubleshooting and maintenance of firm software
Assess the usefulness of pre-developed application packages and adapt them to a user environment.
Identify and define software problems; recommend and implement solutions using discretion and independent judgment.
Utilize funds made available and approved by IT Director, for ongoing training of the IT Operations team to ensure appropriate training and certifications required to perform job duties.
Responsible, directly and indirectly, for maintaining logs on all software purchases, licenses, and upgrades to software applications.
Travel generally not required (less than 5%).
Qualifications and Skills: The IT Manager will have a team-oriented aptitude for working with hardware and software and a desire to help others. The successful candidate will be a self-driven and highly motivated learner with natural curiosity and a minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience in information technology, including 5+ years of management within an IT team environment. BS in Computer Science, MIS or similar field. Skills should also include:
Proven aptitude in managing technology teams.
Ability to exercise independent judgement over significant IT department matters.
Aptitude for planning, organizing and managing projects, with a particularly adept set of prioritization and organization skills.
Vision for future needs, direction, and opportunities for the firm related to technology.
Ability to work with and train attorneys and support staff. Has working command of the industry language and the ability to translate that language to end users.
Interpersonal skills necessary to maintain effective relationships with attorneys, staff, clients, outside service company personnel, and vendor personnel, in person, by e-mail and telephone.
Ability to often work under a high level of mental effort and strain when performing duties. Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with time constraints, interruptions, and stressed situations with minimal direction or supervision.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions from complex manuals and technical materials.
Excellent conflict management skills and ability to handle difficult people in difficult situations.
Law firm experience would be a plus, but is not a requirement.
