This position is responsible for representing the Legal & Compliance departments at the Senior Management level of Disability RMS (DRMS). The incumbent will oversee the Legal & Compliance functions and teams ensuring they reach their objectives. Additionally, this position will have overall responsibility for providing legal and compliance advice, guidance and services to DRMS to, among other things, ensure that it remains in compliance with all applicable laws. This position will further be responsible for providing legal support to the SLF U.S. Law Department as directed.
This position is also responsible for assisting in the setting and implementing of strategic direction within DRMS as a member of the Senior Management Team. With a focus on compliance with applicable laws and the Sun Life Financial Code of Ethics, the position will influence all functional areas including claims management, underwriting, actuarial and client management.
Primary Functions of the Job
The essential functions and responsibilities of this job position include, but are not limited to the following:
• Provide legal advice, guidance and services (including litigation management) • Provide compliance advice, guidance and services • Serve on executive team, providing strategic and tactical advice for the overall management of the company • Responsible for the oversight and management of the Legal and Compliance Departments • Serves as a key legal advisor for complex business transactions and in negotiating critical contracts. • Oversee activities to maintain Company’s Licenses
Additional responsibilities include:
• Projects as assigned by the General Counsel of Sun Life’s U.S. operations • Projects as assigned by the President or the DRMS Senior Management Team • Provide support, as needed and requested by, lawyers at other Sun Life companies • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Position Requirements and Qualifications: • Bachelors and Juris Doctorate degrees required • Licensure and membership in good standing in an appropriate jurisdiction • Minimum 10 years professional legal experience required • Significant knowledge, experience and expertise with legal and compliance issues in disability and specialty risk insurance businesses, and the field of reinsurance • Ability to analyze complex issues and data, critical thinking, problem solving skills and decision-making skills • Strategic and tactical thinking • Demonstrated business (including budgeting and planning) and people management experience • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, conflict resolution, presentation skills to both small and large groups, negotiation skills, tact, persuasiveness, discretion and confidentiality paramount • Solid computer skills with the ability to utilize a variety of software packages • Ability to work professionally and effectively with co-workers, direct reports, clients, claimants, vendors and others with whom DRMS does business
