Where the Chemistry Happens
We have a great opportunity for Counsel to join our team.
You will provide day-to-day regulatory advice and counseling to BASF's Corporate and Site EHS and manufacturing community in areas of the environment (air, water, waste), occupational safety and industrial hygiene (OSHA and MSHA), process safety (RMP and PSM), and transportation (DOT) including regulatory compliance and permitting.

Evaluate and negotiate allocation of environmental contamination risk in acquisitions and divestitures
Handle litigation and compliance enforcement, including interacting with federal, state and local environmental agencies
Monitor and advise EHS function of upcoming legislative and regulatory changes
Develop and improve compliance policies and procedures
Take a leadership role in independently managing projects from beginning to end
Contribute to BASF's legal interaction with our trade associations
Counsel EHS and Real Estate in the investigation, remediation and re-deployment of active and inactive sites. Provide training to EHS community on all aspects of environmental issues
Negotiate orders, consent decrees and other agency documents applicable to remediation of owned and formerly owned manufacturing sites
Review and draft environmental provisions for a wide variety of commercial agreements
Work with outside counsel as needed

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Ingredients for success. What we look for in you.....
Law degree from an accredited institution with bar admission in at least one US state is required
Minimum 8 years of in-depth environmental, health and safety statutory and regulatory legal experience in either a corporate or law firm setting is required
Broad legal knowledge with high degree of proficiency in understanding, interpreting and applying complex federal and state environmental statutes, regulations, and governmental policies required
General understanding of corporate economics and requirements of accruing for environmental remediation liabilities is required
Prior in-house experience supporting the EHS technical function preferred
Superior interpersonal and communication skills essential to the ability to act as attorney/advisor to variety of internal stakeholders, including senior management, counsel and work cooperatively with BASF Corporate and Site EHS, Real Estate Accounting and business groups, participate in teams to solve problems, and represent BASF with government and industry groups
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet critical deadlines
Proven experience identifying and implementing creative solutions and proactively identifying developments in environmental and health and safety law, and developing practical real world solutions to address the impact of such developments on BASF's business and risk allocation decisions
