VUMC is seeking an attorney with a strong background in the purchase and sale of goods and services within the healthcare industry as well as general contracting experience in other areas, including expertise and relevant first-hand experience in contract drafting and negotiation, group purchasing organizations (GPO), anti-trust analysis, and vendor relationships. In addition to contract negotiation and drafting for multiple departments within VUMC, this position will serve as a strategic partner to the VUMC procurement department including in the development, deployment and operation of various service lines under consideration or development. This position will carry the title of Division Counsel and will work directly with VUMC and within the Office of Legal Affairs, reporting to a Managing Counsel and the VUMC General Counsel.
Candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) yearsâ experience representing healthcare organizations or vendors to the healthcare industry. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience working with and advising GPOs or members of a GPO, large procurement departments in a healthcare organization, or purchasing collaboratives. Experience in general contracting for healthcare organizations in other operational areas is a plus. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of federal and state regulatory schemes impacting such areas in a healthcare and government contracting environment. Relevant experience and demonstrated understanding of fraud, waste and abuse laws, Medicare and Medicaid (TennCare) laws, and related regulations is required. The successful candidate will be a good negotiator with excellent oral and written communication skills and will have the ability to work independently within a dynamic and fast paced environment. Excellent client management skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands will be necessary.
Support the procurement activities of a large academic medical center as well as procurement services provided by VUMC to other providers;
Advise clients within VUMC on the relevant regulatory schemes involved in procurement activities and services as well as other areas in which VUMC may contract, including professional services;
Support the development and structural organization of various business lines involving procurement contracting;
Monitor changes in relevant regulatory areas and provide education on those changes to business and operational personnel and compliance and legal affairs teams;
Draft, negotiate and advise on procurement and other general contracts;
Develop and maintain appropriate template agreements to maintain efficiencies in contracting where appropriate;
Provide regulatory support and assistance on contract and transaction matters in which VUMC may engage; and
Provide guidance and assistance to other colleagues in the Office of Legal Affairs in a highly collaborative and team oriented fashion.
