Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors (NIJFON) is a faith-driven legal services organization, welcoming immigrants into our churches and communities by providing free, high-quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy. We represent low-income immigrants throughout Northern Illinois, currently operating clinics in Aurora, Rockford, Chicago, Buffalo Grove and Crystal Lake. The Staff Attorney will represent individuals in immigration and related matters before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and other related entities.
Additionally, NIJFON continues to partner with the New Americans Initiative (NAI) and New Americans Campaign (NAC) in providing outreach, preparation, and legal services related to citizenship and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The Staff Attorney will also be charged with implementing and coordinating NIJFON’s legal services under these programs.
This position is based in Chicago and requires some evening and weekend hours. Access to reliable transportation via car is necessary.
Immigration Legal Services
Represent individuals in immigration and related cases before USCIS, EOIR, the BIA, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and other related entities.
Oversee client intake clinics in locations throughout Northern Illinois.
Oversee and train volunteers for monthly intake clinics.
Ensure that legal and case management practices comply with the relevant principles and rules of professional responsibility for attorneys in the jurisdiction in which the staff attorney is licensed and practices. The staff attorney must also observe National JFON practice standards and policies. In addition, the attorney should be familiar with and observe the ABA Rules of Professional Responsibility and the Board of Immigration Appeals Regulations on Professional Ethics.
Participate in outreach and educational efforts as much as the legal work load may permit and as deemed appropriate pursuant to consultation with the Supervisory Attorney.
Citizenship and DACA Services
Implement and coordinate NIJFON’s citizenship and DACA legal services.
Work with existing legal staff and volunteers to achieve the following requirements of the NAI program:
Outreach to potential clients.
Prepare and file N-400, I-821D, and related applications.
Oversee and review any work performed by volunteer attorneys, law students and other volunteers who may assist the attorney with this work.
Work closely with Executive Director, Supervisory Attorney, and Board of Directors to further the strategic vision of NIJFON.
Travel to each clinic site within the region according to the schedule negotiated with Supervisory Attorney, and as needed to complete casework and follow-up client consultations.
The staff attorney should have a strong commitment to public interest legal service and to the enfranchisement and empowerment of newcomer immigrant communities. Justice for Our Neighbors is more than a legal service project. It is a faith-based ministry of service involving many diverse individuals, cultures and faiths who come together as people of faith to welcome newcomers to our community. As such, the staff attorney should have an appreciation of the spiritual principles of this work and an ability to work sensitively with numerous volunteers and clients having diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, political orientations and faiths.
Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish is required, and fluency is preferred. Proficiency in other languages is a plus.
Professional and Educational Requirements
JD and license to practice law within any jurisdiction in the United States (Illinois preferred) are required.
Knowledge of immigration and nationality law and experience filing and preparing immigration forms and cases is highly preferred.
Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience. A full benefits package, including health insurance and pension, is included.
