About the Center: The Stanford Center on the Legal Profession supports research, teaching, programs and public policy initiatives on crucial issues facing the bar. The Center focuses on issues of professional responsibility and the structure of legal practice. Central concerns include how to enhance access to justice, sustain ethical values, improve bar regulatory structures, provide leadership education, and respond effectively to the changing dynamics of legal workplaces. In support of that mission, the Center promotes research by Stanford professors, students, and post-graduate fellows, as well as collaborative projects with other institutions. It also encourages new courses and joint teaching on issues related to legal ethics, leadership, professional and corporate governance, public service, and the structure of legal practice. In collaboration with other institutions at Stanford and other leading universities, the Center offers lectures, panels, workshops, conferences, and continuing education programs. Through such efforts, the Center seeks to connect theory with practice and advance policies that will address the challenges of a rapidly changing legal profession.
Job Description: The Executive Director for the Center on the Legal Profession, a full-time position, will serve as the chief academic staff person for the center, collaborating with and reporting to the Faculty Director (Professor Deborah Rhode) in planning, coordinating, and executing all Center programs and research projects. The Executive Director will work at Stanford Law School along with academic and program staff, communicate with faculty, and interface with external partners and vendors to meet the goals of the Center. This position will supervise staff for the Center, including the Legal Design Lab staff. Job duties will include:
Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of research initiatives and programming. This includes working with the Faculty Director and Steering Committee to develop and pursue the direction and goals for the Center. This may include identifying topics for research and courses, engaging in research projects with the Faculty Director and affiliated faculty, and participating in special projects.
Lead strategic planning around funding opportunities for both the Center and the Legal Design Lab, including identification, outreach, and stewardship. Develop substantive programs for the Center's Advisory Forum, comprised of leaders from law firms and corporate legal offices. Write proposal and research grants, as well as reports on research, programming, and outreach
Represent the Center to the broader University, external community, and other stakeholders. Create and manage content of the Center website and related publications, including reports, proposals, policy briefings, brochures, and newsletters.
Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum and advise students. Coach and mentor Center staff, including the Legal Design Staff.
Work co-operatively with other law school Centers and Programs to advance the educational and research mission of the law school and Stanford University.
Managing the budget for the Center, including forecasting and reporting on all activities and financial issues from year to year.
Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. JD required. Working as an attorney and pursing research or policy is preferred.
Familiarity with financial management and program development, as well as experience in program administration, budgeting, and development are desirable.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in a collaborative academic setting.
