Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Human Development and Family Studies department at Iowa State University is seeking a Legal Consultant. This position will be physically located in the Iowa Attorney General's Office in Des Moines, and will conduct legal research on issues relevant to the Iowa Child Support Recovery Unit. The Legal Consultant will be primarily responsible for creating and periodically updating legal reference materials, researching and drafting memoranda, analyzing legislation, and examining other issues as requested. This position falls within an annual contract between Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Human Services. The Legal Consultant will perform project-related work with few firm deadlines, therefore working hours are stable with no overtime anticipated and there is no courtroom work. The successful candidate will be a self-starter capable of working independently but also as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are necessary for success. The Legal Consultant must have the ability to perform in-depth legal research with very little supervision, analyze numerous and sometime conflicting legal resources, and reduce the information to short summaries.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. or other professional degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Family law experience - Experience with Westlaw or a similar database
Position located in Des Moines, Iowa.
All accrued vacation must be used during the term of this appointment, any unused vacation will be forfeited upon termination from Iowa State University.
Position renewal is subject to continuing availability of funds.
