he Professional Development Manager will be part of the leadership team, managing Choate’s talent development efforts, whose work includes coaching and counseling a group of attorneys to help them become exceptional lawyers and navigate their careers at Choate, as well as developing the strategy for and overseeing Choate’s robust attorney training agenda.
Primary point of contact for a group of attorneys, working directly with our “clients” and Choate partners (40-50% of job). This includes:
Meeting routinely with associates, patent agents and staff scientists (our “clients”) and their mentors.
Developing plans to respond to both ongoing informal and annual review feedback, and periodically throughout the year to ensure progress towards professional development goals.
Meeting quarterly with all partners by practice group to discuss the development of each of the associates in their group and respond to any identified development needs or goals.
Play a lead role in the strategic planning and development of the Firm’s training agenda for attorneys (15-20% of job). This includes:
Working closely with the Chief of Legal Recruiting and Talent Development and Department Training Partners to develop training strategies and identify innovative execution approaches, targeting the needs of each department.
Managing the team that executes all on-site trainings.
Overseeing the firm’s usage of external training resources, e.g., NITA, PLI, Practical Law, HotShot, MCLE and the BBA.
Other Professional Development Work
Collaborate with the Professional Development team to execute programs in support of Choate’s people mission – The Shared Compact (see attached), including:
Managing new associate and lateral hire orientation and integration, Choate’s mentor program, and the Firm’s Feedback Initiative which works to ensure that all attorneys are receiving both specific and actionable in-the-moment feedback on their work and more holistic project-based feedback on their performance at key intervals depending on the nature of their work.
Implementing the Patent Agent Law School program.
Assisting in the management and execution of the Firm’s annual review process and upward feedback program.
Actively participate and contribute to the Professional Development team discussions focused on continual improvement of all of these programs and help to implement selected approaches.
The remainder of this person’s time will be spent across a variety of these topics and programs.
Skilled at building the relationships and credibility required to successfully coach and counsel attorneys at the associate and partner levels; comfortable and knowledgeable in most effective approaches to influence the behavior of others and give feedback to help attorneys achieve their professional development goals.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to enable the development of effective working relationships throughout the Firm.
Highly organized and able to multi-task on a daily basis; able to adjust to shifting priorities.
Able to work independently and as part of a team with a proactive and positive style that fosters collaborative working relationships.
Utilizes innovative thinking, creativity, and sound analytics and decision-making to ensure the highest level of achievement, productivity, and work satisfaction.
Able to handle confidential information and matters with discretion and good judgment.
Bachelor’s Degree required, Juris Doctor would be a strong plus.
Minimum of 5+ years of experience in professional development in a law firm, law school or professional services environment is required.
Proven expertise in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Knowledge of viDesktop and Epicor, or other HRIS system helpful.
Must have minimal physical mobility. Position may occasionally require standing, walking, reaching, and lifting up to 15 pounds.
Must have the ability to operate equipment such as a computer and copy machine.
Must have the ability to communicate clearly and to read and follow detailed instructions.
Must have the ability to prepare assorted documents and other related materials.
Must have the ability to work in stressful conditions under time deadlines.
