The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is seeking its first Chief IP Counsel who will lead JAX’s management of its patent, trademark and other intellectual property assets around the world. This role will provide strategic IP guidance on JAX’s commercial and research operations, and will work closely with the scientists and leadership team at JAX in advancing JAX’s IP portfolio. Reporting to the General Counsel, this attorney will have significant responsibility and senior level contact throughout The Jackson Laboratory.
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institute with over 2,000 employees whose mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for human disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health. A National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, JAX has a mammalian genetics headquarters in Bar Harbor, Maine, a facility in Sacramento, California, and a genomic medicine facility, The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut.
A competitive compensation package, consisting of a base salary, bonus and exceptional benefits will be offered for this position, consistent with the candidate’s level of experience.
The successful candidate should have a minimum of 10 years of experience as a practicing patent lawyer either in-house at a corporate legal department in the life sciences sector and/or within a law firm. Experience developing and implementing IP strategies and policies; leading the assessment of strategic issues; managing or leading intellectual property litigation/challenges; providing strategic IP guidance and opinions in support of collaboration and licensing transactions; evaluating the patent and trademark portfolios of competitors; and managing budgets, risk/benefit assessments, and strategically balancing use of internal resources and outside counsel and foreign agents are also required. A post-graduate degree in the biological sciences relevant to the work of The Jackson Laboratory is desirable.
