Department Information: Founded in 1842, the Indiana University Maurer School of Law is the university’s flagship law school located on the main campus in Bloomington, a classic college town an hour from Indianapolis. The law school is highly ranked in the nation. Alumni include the Chief Justice of Indiana, five assistant US Attorneys, and influential practitioners and business leaders all over the world. Summary: The Director will work in a highly collaborative setting of a top-tier law school career services office that serves 600+ current student and recent graduates; provide creative, strategic and proactive career development related programs and counseling for students; and foster relationships with employers, alumni, and professional colleagues nationwide and with students individually, in groups, and with school-sponsored organizations.
The Director will report to the Assistant Dean of Career Services and assist in managing departmental programs and services.
Key duties and responsibilities:
Advise JD and LLM students in one-on-one settings to identify and assess skill sets which can be marketed to employers, and link students into the school’s network of alumni and employers.
Maintain relationships with various constituencies in the legal community for recruiting and networking in a variety of legal sectors.
Collaborate with all law school offices to deliver programming as needed to benefit students and the mission of the Career Services Office.
Develop strategies to assist unemployed and underemployed recent law graduates, and work with the career services team, employers, and alumni to assist those unemployed at graduation.
Create, organize, and present workshops to groups of students such as Peer Group Advisors, student organizations, and other categories of students about career planning and professional development regarding successful job and internship search strategies and success in jobs and internships.
Create and manage external programs in markets where students regularly search for jobs.
Coordinate or participate in a range of office-wide programs, including new student orientation, special events, and others based on need.
Participate in professional associations to continue to develop professionally.
Create content for communications to students.
Graduate degree required, JD preferred. Three years of professional experience in legal or career services setting required, five years preferred. Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured by Indiana University. Must be a resourceful and flexible leader; uses strategic thinking and planning, and excellent communication and listening skills; works well under pressure while maintaining a sense of humor; and possesses the high energy necessary to support the mission of the Career Services Office to provide its constituents with the best services possible. Demonstrated ability to counsel students, present workshops on a variety of career-related legal topics, work with students, alumni and employers locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally to market and promote career services, the law school, and its students while maintaining a high level of customer service. Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and computer skills and experience in project management.
