The Junior Associate position with Law Offices of Matthew H. Green offers an exciting opportunity for an entry level attorney to rapidly gain immigration law experience by working directly with detained clients who are challenging deportation. The position is particularly suitable for recent law school graduates with a passion for working in the field of immigration law.
Summary of Responsibilities
Provide limited court coverage for attorneys in the firm's Immigration Litigation Department. Serve in a supportive role to the Senior Immigration Litigation Paralegal. Act as a liaison between potential new clients and the firm's Client Services Representative. Provide excellent customer service to potential new clients in the Eloy and Florence, Arizona immigration detention centers. Work with existing detained clients in Eloy and Florence, Arizona, at the request and direction of the firm's attorneys.
Represent the Law Offices of Matthew H. Green with professionalism, enthusiasm and the highest ethical standards.
Proactively respond to potential new clients (PNCs) detained in immigration custody in Eloy and Florence, Arizona. This will include:
Conducting in-person consultations with detained PNCs,
Gathering relevant information from court files maintained by the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) (Immigration Court),
Locating and ordering criminal records, when necessary for assessment of PNC’s case,
Following up with friends and family members of detained PNCs when additional information is required to assess case,
Performing initial case evaluations and communicating potential litigation strategies to the PNCs and their friends/family,
Relaying information gathered through the consultation process to the firm's Client Services Representative, and to the Director of the Litigation Department, to determine follow up steps for PNC retention,
Building and maintaining positive relationships with PNCs and their friends/family throughout the pre-retention phase,
Confidently explaining fee agreements to PNCs, their friends/families.
Represent the law firm's existing clients detained in immigration custody under the direction of the Director of the Litigation Department and the more senior attorneys assigned to individual cases. This will include:
Initial development of, and refining of, client affidavits for various types of cases, including asylum, cancellation of removal, and bond redeterminations,
Initial completion of immigration applications with clients,
Working together with clients and families to identify and obtain supporting documents for removal and bond cases,
Visiting clients on a regular basis to provide them with superior customer and legal services,
Filing documents with the immigration courts located in detention facilities.
Occasional appearances in immigration court on a relatively limited basis.
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Fluency in Spanish
Strong telephone communication and active listening skills
Client service oriented with demonstrated ability to adapt/respond to different types of personalities, including emotional or difficult clients
Strong interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated patience and empathy
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively
Proficient in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Power Point and Excel
Must have reliable transportation and valid driver’s license, registration and insurance
Willingness to travel up to 75% of working hours and to spend substantial periods of time in immigration detention centers
Must be comfortable and willing to discuss financial aspects of legal representation with potential clients
