ENGLISH - Full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 12, 2019. PhD in English Linguistics or English with emphases in English Linguistics and TESOL required. All tenured and tenure-track faculty teach courses in their areas of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ability to teach composition highly desired. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates must show a strong commitment to teaching excellence and provide evidence of professional activity that keeps them abreast of knowledge and developments within their discipline. The teaching load averages 12 units per quarter (with course load reductions in each of the first two years to help establish one's professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service.
Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty should be engaged in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, faculty perform service activities at all levels of the University, though initially service is primarily at the department level.

This Assistant Professor of English search will occur at the same time as a university-wide cluster of searches designed to increase curricular coverage of areas related to diversity and inclusion, as well as to promote inclusive teaching strategies across the university. If the successful Assistant Professor of English candidate's research overlaps with the area of diversity and inclusion, they will have the opportunity to join and support these university efforts.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
PhD in English Linguistics or English with emphases in English Linguistics and TESOL required; experience and excellence in college-level teaching; and evidence of professional activity that keeps the candidate abreast of knowledge and developments within their professional field. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate is complete prior to the start of appointment.
Ability to teach composition highly desired.
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
