Morrison & Foerster LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm with 16 offices worldwide, has an opening for a Research Services Manager within our Research Services Department. This role can be based in any of our U.S. offices.
The Research Services Manager works as part of a firmwide team to provide substantive, senior research expertise for client work and business development efforts. S/he manages and develops research staff and leads client service strategies and operations, including ensuring that information resources align with practice area needs.
Provide senior level research expertise to support the Firm's practice areas.
Provide advanced research, synthesis, and analysis to support the business development efforts of the Firm.
Distill and present research work product in a concise, professional manner.
Proactively and independently assess research requests and ensure that research meets stated and anticipated needs.
Track and record billable and non-billable time spent providing research services to research services clients according to the Firm's research services billing policy.
Monitor and manage the research queue by working with Research Analysts team to claim unassigned requests to avoid queue overflow and delayed responses.
Library Strategic and Operational Management
In collaboration with Director, firmwide research services team, and internal clients, establish and regularly review research services objectives; develop and implement strategies to increase client service, effectively deploy resources, and align department with Firm goals.
Apply deep professional knowledge to achieve high quality day-to-day research services and to ensure department is recognized as operating at full potential.
Ensure research services are effectively promoted to attorneys and timekeepers; develop strategies to increase knowledge flow and accessibility of information.
Assess information needs of practice groups and proactively recommend resources and solutions to meet practice group needs.
Educate and advise attorneys and paralegals on sources and strategies for research.
Provide guidance in collection development and maintenance and space utilization.
Demonstrate project management skills as a part of a larger team. Participate in projects that increase the value of research services to clients, timekeepers, and the Firm.
Collaborate closely with Director of Research Services to monitor and assess performance of department against budget guidelines.
Department Staff Management
Ensure human resources policies and practices are followed within Department; promote consistency and fairness, maintain open door policy and promote open dialog.
Ensure that Department staff is knowledgeable and trained on professional and technical matters.
Provide supportive coaching; set achievable, challenging team goals; develop skills of team members to ensure achievement of client service priorities.
Prepare timely, substantive, and strategically aligned performance evaluations.
Remain current in industry trends in library services, practice group resources, and the legal profession.
Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; proactively use most current technology to further teamwork, client service, and efficiency.
Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science or equivalent degree strongly preferred plus a minimum of 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Bachelor's degree required.
In-depth knowledge of the legal materials and databases used to support the Firm's practice areas and research needs for client work and for business development efforts.
