Harter Secrest & Emery LLP is seeking a dynamic leader to join the Firm’s senior management team. This position will be responsible for oversight of the firm’s attorney recruitment, training and professional development initiatives. The Director of Legal Talent and Development reports to the Managing Partner and will work closely with the firm’s Hiring Partner, Training Partner and Chair of the Associate Evaluation Committee to design and implement the firm’s recruiting, training and professional development strategies.
Provide leadership and vision in the development of attorney recruitment strategies;
Oversees all aspects of attorney recruiting, including the summer associate program, on campus recruiting and lateral hiring; develops new and innovative recruitment strategies to ensure the best possible applicants and collaborates with Hiring Committee to design hiring strategies that will support the ongoing needs of the firm;
Responsible for the effective integration and orientation of new hires and the ongoing training of all attorneys; collaborates with practice group leaders to identify required skills sets for each area of practice, assesses training needs, designs the firm’s training curriculum and implements internal continuing legal education programs that meet the development needs of the attorneys and the licensing requirements of the New York CLE Board;
Supports the Associate Evaluation Committee and oversees implementation of the annual associate performance review and compensation review processes; provides coaching and guidance to associates in addressing specific professional development needs;
Supervises the legal recruiting and development staff by providing instruction and guidance in support of the recruiting, training and professional development efforts; and
Prepares and manages fiscal budget.
Knowledge, Skills and Education Requirements:
Relevant professional experience with a minimum of five years managerial experience; law firm or other related professional services firm experience a plus; Juris Doctor strongly preferred;
Demonstrated strategic leadership experience in a fast paced, client service environment;
Demonstrated success in leading others and developing effective working relationships;
Advanced organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to respond to multiple priorities and meet varying deadlines with a client service approach;
Strong oral and written communication skills;
Desire and ability to coach, mentor and influence others;
Working knowledge of Human Resources functions, issues, and terminology; and
Proven proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Competitive salary dependent on education and relevance of prior work experience
