Growing 25-attorney law firm based in Washington, D.C., with offices in Boulder, Colorado, seeks an experienced marketing and business development professional to assume its newly created Director of Business Development position. Manage all details of the implementation of the firm’s business development initiatives
Work closely with partners to develop and execute the firm’s overall business development plan
Proactively identify opportunities for direct new business through research, networking, and other avenues
Track, analyze, and report on results of and recommended improvements for firm business development efforts
Develop and implement business development plans and budgets at the firm, practice group, and individual attorney levels
Research, monitor, and vet client relations and sales issues and topics to stay abreast of emerging trends and suggest best practices
Manage proposal development and responses
Plan and execute flawless seminars and other firm events
Proactively identify associations, organizations, and conferences for firm involvement and create or solidify relationships with key decision makers with such associations or organizations on behalf of the firm
Proactively identify possible speaking opportunities for the firm and create or solidify relationships with key decision makers related to said opportunities to secure speaking engagements on behalf of the partners
Proactively identify opportunities for awards and peer review accolades
Identify opportunities for attorney articles in outside publications and work to secure such opportunities on behalf of the firm
Analyze client and revenue data to develop and/or refine business development strategies
Periodically review website, brand, and promotional materials to ensure consistency with business development efforts
Assist with writing website content to ensure consistency with business development initiatives
Oversee the firm’s social media presence
Manage public relations efforts for firm and partners, as needed (i.e., responding to press inquiries, seeking out press when appropriate)
Prepare monthly project report and briefing of business development directives
Develop marketing department budget in collaboration with the Director of Marketing
Essential Skills and Functions
Exceptional written and oral communications skills, including proofreading and attention to detail
Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, tact, discretion, and judgement, are required
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence for results: includes establishing rapport and working effectively across diverse stakeholder groups, both internal and external
Demonstrated track record of developing strategies and priorities, implementation and tracking/measuring ROI of activities and initiatives
Critical and creative thinking to achieve strategic objectives
Ability to work both independently and in a cross-functional team environment
Demonstrated understanding, operation, and utilization of computer equipment and programs required to effectively perform job responsibilities, such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat
Flexibility to attend functions outside of normal business hours
Required Education and Experience
Management: 5+ years marketing or business development experience, with significant and demonstrable project management experience
Client service: Ability to manage multiple projects at once and respond quickly to inquiries so as to serve as an ambassador of superior internal client service. This role requires hands-on abilities with limited support in a team environment. Ability to motivate attorneys while prioritizing workload is essential
Budgetary: Experience in managing both project-based and contributing to longer-term marketing and communications budgets
Communication skills: The candidate must have experience effectively communicating in both verbal and written formats
Work style: Ability to prioritize competing stakeholders and deadlines with a pleasant and professional demeanor
Education and prior service: A Bachelor’s Degree is required, preferably in business development, marketing, communications, or a related field. Experience in a law firm and/or professional services industry is required
