Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation: The successful candidate will have approximately three (3) to five (5) years of litigation experience preferably in a top-tier law firm, and preferably with experience in employment law litigation. The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation will initially support the senior litigators and will work closely with the Universityâ™s HR function, including providing advice and counseling on employment and workplace dispute matters, and will take on additional and independent responsibilities over time. The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation must be able to grow into the role of being a trusted advisor on the myriad of matters an institution like the University faces. The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation duties and responsibilities will include a wide variety of general litigation matters, as well as policy and compliance work, and general advice and counseling. In addition, the successful candidate must have a high capacity to collaborate in diverse environments and build relationships, handle matters involving issues in practice areas with which the candidate may not have previous experience, and provide practical and credible guidance throughout the University community. This position will report to the General Counsel and will work directly with the senior litigation attorneys in the office.
The job uses legal expertise, best practices and knowledge of University policies, structure and culture to provide legal counsel facilitating goals across units and protecting the University's reputation and business interests. The legal office negotiates and resolves unique and complex issues to promote compliance with all relevant laws and regulations and University policies.
The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation requires in-depth knowledge and experience. The successful candidate uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external University issues to improve products or services.
The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions. The successful candidate works independently and will act as a resource for University colleagues with less experience.
The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation uses breadth and depth of knowledge to counsel on a broad range of legal matters as requested, solves complex problems, and advises University clients on the legal implications of University initiatives, decisions, and policy changes.
The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation advises University clients on recent changes in laws and regulations that affect the University, and recommends process improvements to ensure compliance of laws and regulations.
The Assistant General Counsel â“ Litigation acts as a liaison with outside legal firms, and represents the University in certain disputes, as appropriate.

Education, Experience or Certifications:
Juris Doctor degree from a strong law school required.
Admission to the Illinois Bar, or eligibility for admission within six months of notification of employment required.
Approximately 3-5 years of legal experience required.
Top-tier law firm training is preferred.
Employment law experience with a wide variety of employment issues and employment counseling skills is preferred.
