MUSIC DEPARTMENT: Full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor - Director of Jazz Studies in the Music Department, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 12, 2019. The successful candidate will conduct big band jazz ensembles and small combos, teach classes in jazz studies, and oversee the administrative needs of the jazz program as part of a comprehensive university music program. Contributions to other academic areas within the Music Department is essential, and those areas of expertise should be addressed in the cover letter.
The successful candidate will have an earned Doctorate in Music with at least two years of experience in conducting and directing a university jazz band program, as well as an established performance career. At least five years of experience in conducting and directing a university jazz band program is preferred. ABD candidates will be considered with degree completion expected before the position start date of September 12, 2019. Excellence in recent undergraduate teaching should be documented in the cover letter, and the letter should also address the candidate's ability to contribute in other areas within the Music Department, such as music technology, music industry, or music education, etc.
Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of professional development (research/scholarship/creative activity, including publication or its equivalent), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load averages 12 units per quarter (with course load reductions in each of the first two years to help establish one's professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate teaching excellence and scholarly/artistic activity at the university level including individual performance. The department is committed to the teacher-scholar and artist-teacher models. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholar/artists, faculty should be engaged in work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.

Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
