Towson University seeks a highly skilled and experienced attorney to join the Office of General Counsel as Associate General Counsel. This position will have primary responsibility for the management of numerous and varied legal matters and will provide timely and effective advice and counsel to University units and personnel. The successful candidate will be a collaborative thought partner, an excellent communicator, and will be nimble in responding to a variety of higher education legal issues. The ability to multi-task, be responsive and collegial are essential to this position. Subject matter responsibility includes: providing high level advice to staff and faculty on a broad range of matters including contracts and other agreements, employment, student matters, compliance and privacy laws; litigation coordination with the Maryland Office of Attorney General; drafting position statements to administrative agencies; working collaboratively with campus partners on the drafting and revising of policies and procedures; undertaking projects relevant to the law and its impact on Towson University as directed by the General Counsel; and other job related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience: Earned Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school; membership in the Maryland Bar or eligibility for admission to the Maryland Bar within one year of hire, and at least five (5) years of experience performing legal work. Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong analytical skills; an ability to work efficiently and effectively to serve the changing needs of our institution; a willingness to support other attorneys; and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Experience: Experience in higher education representation; contract review; employment law, including handling discrimination and harassment issues, grievances, and EEOC/MCCR complaints is preferred.
