The Attorney Professional Development (PD) Manager’s role is to develop, implement, and administer substantive legal training and other professional development programs to maximize the development and value of the intellectual capital of the Firm’s attorneys.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Manager regional, interactive training for local offices and work with any number of practice groups to bring interaction to distance training provided by practice groups for all levels of attorneys.
Design and disseminate targeted training for specific groups, whether distance or in-person around topics of time management, client development and/or management skills. These could be with or without outside consultants.
Executes local training programs in conjunction with firm wide development goals and materials.
Train new team members on the firm wide Evaluation Process, which includes creating forms with the HRIS team, obtaining the correct level and practice areas, training each office administrator on the process, recommending ways to 100% participation, and supervising the team's review and audit of all completed forms and goals.
Manage lateral associates firmwide and create a consistent approach for our offices hiring laterally. Work with recruiting, integration and professional development to ensure consistency across offices for lateral associates. Plan and execute associate retreats as needed.
Work with Director on strategic initiatives, including analyzing attrition and creating innovative ways to retain talent and develop training.
Be a resource for attorneys trying to find CLE opportunities and ensure all programming for which this is responsible obtains CLE, in conjunction with the three-person CLE team.
Other Duties: Additional other ad hoc duties may include overseeing publication of course catalogs, resources and competencies, supervising the various offices’ professional development liaisons so that they can disseminate attorney program information, and evaluating and recommending CLE or PD process improvements to ensure controls and departmental efficiency.
Skills & Competencies:
Ability to utilize legal experience and instructional design expertise to create interactive training, whether distance learning or live, in person. An understanding of learning concepts and a deep desire to improve upon existing knowledge transfer training.
Demonstrated leadership ability, as well as excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written communications skills.
The candidate must have the ability to operate independently and collaboratively with the Firm’s professional development team, as well as be able to work under periodic pressure to meet tight deadlines.
The individual must be a creative thinker who can develop new ways to meet team’s goals.
An excellent implementer is required but will not thrive without creativity.
Someone who has high executive functioning will do well in this position.
Qualifications & Prior Experience:
Bachelor's degree required. Master’s Degree in Education, Organizational Development, Instructional Design as well as a JD are preferred. 5 or more years of previous professional development experience, preferably with a law firm or legal education entity. Current membership in PDC or similar organization, such as ACLEA or ATD is preferred.
