The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) of The Bar Association of San Francisco currently has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Part-Time Staff Attorney with our Federal Pro Bono Project. This position is based in Oakland, for 3 days a week (21 hours a week), with benefits.
About the Job:
The Federal Pro Bono Project is a joint endeavor of JDC and the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. The Project provides one-on-one assistance to litigants representing themselves in District Court. The Part Time Staff Attorney’s responsibilities will include providing brief advice and counsel to pro se litigants, assisting in drafting and reviewing court documents, conducting legal research, screening cases for potential placement with a pro bono attorney, and making referrals for litigants who cannot file a case in District Court. The Project has offices in the District Court’s San Francisco and Oakland courthouses. This position staffs the office in the Oakland courthouse. This is a part-time, three day a week (21 hours) position with benefits.
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to explain legal concepts to non-lawyers
Excellent research skills
Ability to prioritize, make quick decisions and handle a high volume of activity while maintaining attention to detail
Ability and motivation to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds, including people with mental health concerns
Ability to work in a team-oriented environment, as well as independently on short and long-term projects

JDC’s legal services programs provide free legal representation and social services through its staff and volunteers to low-income and indigent people. JDC recruits, trains, and supports volunteer attorneys, law students, social workers, and interpreters to provide services in the cases for which our clients have the greatest legal need.
