Berkeley Law’s Pro Bono Program offers students the opportunity to engage in meaningful legal service in the community as early as their first semester of law school. Students can apply to participate in our Student-Initiated Legal Services Projects (SLPS), Berkeley Law Alternative Service Trips (BLAST), or volunteer independently with community organizations. Students do not receive academic credit for participating in SLPS or other pro bono work, and we do not have a pro bono requirement. Rather, Berkeley Law has a pro bono culture and students who engage in pro bono work learn the value and importance of providing access to justice. Students who perform a certain number of hours of pro bono legal service are recognized with honors and celebrated at graduation. SLPS are the heart of our Pro Bono Program and a vital part of the first-year experience at Berkeley Law. These pro bono projects are founded and led by Berkeley Law students. The Pro Bono Program serves as an introduction to Berkeley Law’s experiential education program for most Berkeley Law first year J.D. students and LL.M. students, and SLPS provide leadership opportunities to the upper-division students. In addition to providing students with hands-on legal services experience, the Pro Bono Program also hosts programming throughout the year to educate students about the justice gap, the collaboration between the public interest community and the private bar, and the legal ethics commitment attorneys have to perform pro bono services throughout their career. Handles administration of the Pro Bono Program, including activities which may include some of the following functions: finance, facilities, payroll, space planning, student services, human resources, communications, informational technology or safety.
Manage all administrative functions of office, such as ordering supplies, compiling and copying marketing or other materials, etc.
Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and guidelines.
Gathers and analyzes financial and other resource data; prepares reports or analyses of operational activities, evaluation of current and proposed services, etc. Primarily assists in the management of the administrative and financial functions of the Pro Bono Program and the roughly 30 student-led pro bono projects and other student pro bono opportunities. Activities include: •Managing travel logistics for Pro Bono students and staff •Processing and submitting all student reimbursements •Assisting students with university finance policies to ensure compliance •Serves as the point of contact with the Berkeley Law Business Services Office manages student group budgets along with assisting the Director in managing student group budget applications
Helps develop and maintain the Pro Bono Program budget. Functions as a resource on issues such as researching complex financial discrepancies, escalated customer service problems and vendor concerns.
Helps assess and recommend changes to office processes to maintain compliance with federal and state requirements and internal policies as needed.
Plans and manages Pro Bono events. May collaborate or partner with the Event Services Team at Berkeley Law. The Pro Bono Administrator will: • Plan and manage, or assist in the planning, of pro bono-related events throughout the academic year. • Serve as liaison with the Business Services Office and Event Services Team at Berkeley Law, as well as external constituents (if any), when planning events.
The Pro Bono Administrator may also host pro bono events.
Provides limited administrative support to the Public Interest Working Group (PIWG) for PIWG-related events. PIWG is a working group of
Berkeley Law centers and departments that promote pro bono and public interest work through the School of Law.•Demonstrated ability to quickly learn campus-specific and other computer application programs, such as BearBuy and UC travel and reimbursement systems. •Familiarity in working with Adobe Acrobat DC, Excel, and Google Suite features. •Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing. •Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding time frames. •Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. •Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. •Ability to relate to and desire to work with diverse audiences within the legal profession, including students, faculty, academic administrators, and practicing lawyers. •A strong belief in the importance of public interest work and a desire to work with students. Education/Training: •Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
