Job Function
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Development, the Director, Planned Giving is a member of the College's frontline fundraising team and will lead all gift and estate planning efforts to raise funds from alumnae, parents, and friends of the College. The Director, Planned Giving will supervise one planned giving staff member and, in coordination with the Vice President and Assistant Vice President, will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive planned giving program, including strategies for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting planned giving prospects.
Essential Duties Summary - Develop and implement a marketing strategy for the College's life income gifts, bequests, and other deferred gifts.
- Work with the Vice President and Assistant Vice President to develop strategies for incorporating planned giving techniques into solicitations of individual prospects.
- Cultivates, solicits, and stewards donors and prospective major and/or planned gift donors; manage a portfolio of approximately 75 planned giving prospects managing communications and follow-up, including maintaining detailed activity reports and move management information on all prospects in the portfolio.
- Assists in transacting and marketing gifts of securities, and in transacting gifts of non-cash assets and/or gifts with unusual tax ramifications.
- Supervises a Planned Giving officer including conducting prospect review meetings to discuss specific prospect strategies as they relate to prioritized fundraising needs.
- Provide comprehensive proposals and responses to donor and professional advisor inquiries relating to planned gifts and other areas of support for the College.
- With the assistance of the Senior Associate Director of Planned Giving and the support of the Administrative Assistant, direct all aspects of the life-income gift program; work closely with Finance team at the College and outside firm (State Street Global Advisors) charged with administering the College's life-income gift program to carry out day-to-day management of the program and required regulatory reporting.
- Coordinates aspects of planned giving program with the College's General Counsel, Controller, and other officers as needed.
- Manage the administration of all active estates and other testamentary gifts (retirement plans, life insurance policies, etc.), including communications with attorneys, fiduciaries, and other advisers.
- Assist in transacting and marketing gifts of securities, and in transacting gifts of non-cash assets, international gifts, and/or gifts with complex tax issues.
- Provide strategic direction for stewardship and cultivation of all members of The Athena Society, the recognition society for planned giving donors, including events and communications.
- Draft and/or review gift documents; review draft board resolutions for new endowment funds.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities - Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Thorough knowledge of planned giving vehicles and aspects of tax law that affect charitable giving
- Ability to deal with the public with patience, diplomacy, and tact
- Highly skilled at negotiation, critical thinking, and data analysis
- Sound, mature judgment, with the ability to communicate effectively, and diplomatically both orally and in writing, with volunteers, donors, and a wide variety of constituents
- Campaign experience desirable
- Travel required
Required Qualification Summary
- Bachelor's degree; legal degree desirable
- 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in planned giving, a minimum of 2 years management experience
- Refined computer skills, particularly with relational databases and programs within Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated track record of developing long-lasting and productive relationships between individual donors and/or investors and the institutions they support
Preferred Qualification Summary - Experience with PG Calc software program
Physical Demands Summary - Ability to perform customary office tasks such as sitting, walking, standing, computing, and answering telephone for moderate to prolonged a combined with light to moderate reaching, bending and lifting.
