Muscatine Legal Services, a private non-profit agency that provides quality legal assistance to low-income residents of Muscatine County, is looking for a full-time staff attorney. This position offers the qualified applicant the opportunity to provide public service, assist clients with a variety of legal needs and develop skills across a wide spectrum of law.
The Staff Attorney reports to the Executive Director. He or she will represent low-income clients in both civil and criminal matters by performing the following duties:
Representing clients in obtaining divorces, custodial and child support orders, and domestic abuse protective orders.
Advising clients regarding employment matters, guardianships, Social Security benefits, simple wills and landlord-tenant disputes.
Representing indigent criminal defendants in misdemeanor cases.
Representing parties in juvenile cases (both delinquency and child-in-need-of-assistance proceedings).
Representing respondents in mental health and substance abuse commitment hearings.
Communicating and meeting with clients regularly.
Drafting pleadings and other legal documents.
Corresponding with clients, attorneys and court personnel.
Advising the Muscatine Legal Services board of directors on matters of importance.
Performing other miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.
The position requires a J.D. from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in Iowa, but applicants who expect to graduate in May 2019 and who are scheduled to take the bar exam will be considered. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, the ability to manage a large and varied caseload and a commitment to public service.
