The Office of Technology Licensing at Stanford University seeks a Technology Licensing Associate 2 to collaborate with inventors, evaluate and develop technology licensing opportunities and strategies, and negotiate the terms and conditions of agreements, as well as, oversee and administer patent-related activities.
The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) was established in 1970 to manage the intellectual property assets of Stanford University. OTL evaluates, markets, and licenses technology owned by the University. OTL's mission is to encourage effective technology transfer for the public benefit as well as generating royalty income for Stanford to benefit research and education. OTL is one of the country's most active offices in the field of technology transfer from the university to industry. Our staff, most of whom are professionals engaged directly in licensing, manages over 3,000 active dockets. OTL will move from Palo Alto to the new Stanford Redwood City campus in July 2019. The new Stanford Redwood City campus brings together 2,700 staff in a collaborative environment that reflects Stanford's culture and mission. The campus will offer amenities such as onsite cafes and a dining pavilion, a high-end fitness facility with an outdoor pool, and a childcare center for Stanford families. CORE DUTIES*
With limited supervision from the Associate Director, Licensing:
Evaluate and analyze new invention disclosures, including initial review, meeting with inventor(s), identifying industry reviewers, making contact, and sending materials.
Collaborate with Business Development and Marketing specialists and inventors on developing and implementing marketing strategies for new inventions in the life sciences.
Follow-up, collect and evaluate information, and provide necessary notifications.
Develop licensing strategy, identifying potential licensees, negotiating terms, preparing draft agreements, and closing the deal.
Oversee life science patent-related activities including selection of attorney, determination of when and where to file patent applications, and management of an inventory of unlicensed cases from a financial perspective.
Monitor life science license agreements, ensure compliance with diligence terms, prepare and execute amendments, and process terminations.
Maintain and develop relations with licensees; monitor progress in licensed product(s) development.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a life science discipline (for example chemical engineering or bioengineering degree) and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Preferred: An advanced degree in one of the scientific disciplines listed above and/or MBA and/or JD. Business development and/or licensing experience in either industry or academia, including negotiation of IP agreements. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong professional interpersonal, oral, written and presentation skills.
Strong technical training and analytical skills sufficient to gain a rapid understanding of new cutting-edge technologies.
Demonstrated customer relationship skills, and the ability to influence and negotiate with internal constituencies and external business partners.
Demonstrated ability to take ownership and leadership of projects from inception to completion, including developing strategy, implementation and execution of tasks.
Demonstrated ability to independently exercise sound judgment and decision making, problem solving and critical analysis, including in the context of only having access to limited or incomplete information.
Demonstrated knowledge of contract and patent laws, University policies, industry and regulatory requirements.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a large volume and prioritize a variety of tasks and demands.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn applicable business-related systems.
Certifications and Licenses:
Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) desired.
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.
Occasionally stand, walk, use a telephone, lift, carry, push, pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Rarely writes by hand.
