Ames Laboratory is seeking applications for a position to serve as Ames Laboratory's General Counsel. Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science National Laboratory operated by Iowa State University. The Laboratory conducts research into various areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-performance computing, and environmental cleanup and restoration.
The incumbent will be a collaborative member of the Laboratory's leadership team, advising Laboratory management on a full range of ongoing legal matters, with a focus on contract, regulatory, and compliance matters. This position is a part of the Department of Energy's Contractor Attorney Association and will work collaboratively with ISU's Office of University Counsel on laboratory-related matters.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of individuals internal and external to Ames Laboratory. The candidate will possess the ability to exercise sound judgment on challenging issues and perform tasks with professionalism, diligence, and integrity. The ability to work independently on routine legal matters, and to recognize issues of institutional importance and keep University Counsel and Ames Laboratory administrators appropriately informed will also be needed.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 3 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience with contract law
Experience with application of federal acquisition regulations
Experience drafting and negotiating research along with intellectual property contracts and documents
Experience advising a Department of Energy (DOE) management & operating (M&O) laboratory
Experience advising public entities including public higher education clients
Experience working collaboratively and managing relationships with multiple interrelated entities
This position serves at the pleasure of university administration and is exempt from certain P&S policies.
