Life Span’s Center for Legal Services and Advocacy seeks a Human Trafficking Court Advocate to provide advocacy and support to clients who have experienced human trafficking and domestic violence. Life Span is a nationally known leader in the provision of services to victims of violence and their children. Our comprehensive services include legal representation, counseling, and advocacy. Our work encompasses such issues as police domestic violence, immigration, employment issues, sexual assault protective orders, mental health, teen dating violence, and battered women as defendants. Our agency has two sites, one in Des Plaines and one in Chicago. Our services are available in English, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Arabic, Telugu, and Polish and are free of charge. Our agency provides national leadership in policy work and legislation, and our staff has trained lawyers and other professionals in Illinois and across the country.
General Job Description: Assist victims of human trafficking who share a domestic relationship with their trafficker and provide support with criminal justice system advocacy, civil legal representation, immigration relief, counseling and other services.
Provide court advocacy to clients in all Cook County courthouses as needed.
Provide crisis intervention and support to clients accessing criminal justice system.
Conduct client needs assessments, interviews and complete intake paperwork.
Explain Life Span services to clients and help them form a plan of action based on their options under the law.
Explain available legal relief and the Illinois Domestic Violence Act to clients.
Assist client with any law enforcement interaction they choose to engage in.
Provide clients with referrals and linkages to other needed services.
Maintain case files.
Maintain complete client statistics and submit on a timely basis.
Accompany clients and attorneys to court.
Translate written documents and interpret at client interviews and to assist clients in court.
Attend and participate in trainings and outreach as assigned.
Assist attorneys with document preparation.
Work with counseling and legal staff to provide a coordinated response to clients’ needs.
Reports to: Director of Policy and Advocacy
Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts Degree; prior experience working with survivors of human trafficking is a priority; bilingual language skills in Spanish or other languages is helpful; must demonstrate a commitment to working in the not-for-profit/public interest sector.
