The person filling this position will provide legal counsel to Cargill, Incorporated as an in-house environmental lawyer and will be a part of the Cargill Law Department. This lawyer will work closely with Cargill business personnel, including senior executives and facility operators, with Cargill’s corporate Environmental Health & Safety partners, and with other lawyers and paralegals who also provide legal counsel to Cargill. Principal job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
55% - Directly managing and providing legal advice and risk management counseling to businesses and corporate functions on a wide variety of legal issues across environmental media and U.S. jurisdictions, including facility and product regulatory compliance, permitting, litigation, contracts, land use, and real estate and corporate transactional matters.
15% - Practicing preventive law, including providing legal advice as well as training and education on a wide variety of legal topics including regulatory and environmental compliance, contracting practices, environmental stewardship and products, as well as assisting Cargill businesses on compliance with Company policies and procedures.
10% - Proactively managing the environmental legal affairs of assigned Cargill clients through ongoing identification and assessment of key legal risks and issues, continuous monitoring of legal service needs, and proactively determining with the environmental legal team how to most effectively and efficiently meet those needs.
10% - Working closely with department colleagues, including the commercial legal teams assigned to one or more Cargill businesses, to gain a deep understanding of the business’s environmental risks and strategies, strategic legal issues, challenges and opportunities.
5% - Managing outside counsel and consultants engaged to support litigation and a variety of other matters requiring particular expertise.
5% Miscellaneous projects/duties as assigned, including Cargill Law Department initiatives.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Law degree and license to practice law for applicable jurisdiction, minimum of 7 years of experience in Environmental Law.
Strong leadership skills, proven ability to communicate and influence at all levels within the organization.
Ability to effectively manage conflict and apply judgement in counseling.
Proven ability to serve as a strong business partner and proven history of building relationships and trust with others.

Prior experience working with global organizations.
Excellent English language skills required (reading, speaking and writing).
Product regulatory and stewardship experience (e.g., TSCA, REACH and FIFRA).
Expertise managing air emissions compliance.
Experience managing environmental issues outside of the United States.
Experience managing environmental legal issues in industrial and food production operations.
Strong history of coaching / developing others.
