Nelson Mullins is a full-service law firm with 25 offices in 11 states and the District of Columbia. The Firm was founded in 1897 and is headquartered in Columbia, SC. The Firm currently has approximately 800 attorneys and professionals and total employment of 1,600. This position is a new position to support the execution of Firm strategic initiatives and special projects (“projects”). The type of person for this role is someone with strategic planning, consulting and/or project management passion and experience to serve as an “internal consultant” within the Firm.
Overall, the Strategic Projects Coordinator (the “Coordinator”) is responsible for assisting with the design and execution of projects, generally at the “firm” level for projects not otherwise under the direct responsibility of a Firm or Department leader. This is a new position to assist the Firm to “scale” as an AmLaw 69 firm and to accelerate the execution of strategic initiatives.
As context and examples, below are types of current projects for which the Coordinator may have direct or indirect oversight (and generally not as the project sponsor/owner, but as leading the execution and support for the design and execution of the project, after which someone else in the Firm assumes ownership):
Strategic initiatives resulting from the annual Firm Strategic Plan
Practice support such as Management Group, Team, Practice/Industry and Office business plans
Recruiting, onboarding and integration of lateral recruits
Research and guidance for use of artificial intelligence, automation, and analytics (including data governance and big data)
Monitoring of business trends and legal profession developments (e.g., technology, CLOC, etc.)
Firm mergers, new offices and large lateral groups
Implementation of vendor management process and system
Implementation of an “enterprise” project management office frameworkThe above are examples of current projects; the project list will change year over year.
For agreed-upon projects like the examples above, responsibilities include:
Collaborate with relevant Firm contacts for input on the initial scope and design
Prepare and manage project plans for implementation and ongoing execution
Prepare economic analysis of the revenue and/or expense implications, including both hard costs and soft costs
Coordinate execution of action steps
Lead status meetings
Prepare status reports
Other ongoing and recurring responsibilities include:
Research trends and best practices in the general business environment, legal profession and peer law firms
Prepare dashboards with key performance indicators and trend analyses
Maintain overall enterprise project list
Assist with preparation of annual Department goals
Prepare annual budget requests for costs related to projects planned for the next year
Engage with peers at other comparable law firms for hot topics, trends, roles and resources, etc.
Currently, no direct supervisory responsibility (although this could change over time)
Frequent engagement with Department leaders and various Firm Leaders (Management Groups, Team Leaders, Practice/Industry Group Leaders, and Office Managing Partners)
Provide reports to various Firm Committees, as requested
Education and Experience
Minimum of college bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 6 years of experience in strategic planning, consulting or project management
Strategic thinking with future orientation and advance planning
Organized with project management skills and detailed tactical execution of projects and initiatives
A balance of creativity/innovation with process/project management; clear desire and ability to create strategies from scratch and then translate into implementation plans for execution
Collaborative and works well with others while also a self-starter and independent worker
Ability to exercise management judgment to make decisions focused on the overall objective and the “why” behind the initiative
Business acumen to design and execute projects to achieve the business objectives and engage other Firm leaders in business discussions
Strong written and oral communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
