The City of Nogales is currently recruiting for the position of City Attorney. The City Attorney provides all legal services needed by the City for the City Council and administrative staff.
The classification is non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position. The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council to a two (2) year term and may receive general direction from the City Manager.
The City Attorney serves as the City’s chief legal advisor and is expected to provide sound and efficient legal counsel and advice on a broad range of local government and legal issues, a sampling of which include: public safety, utilities, land use, planning & zoning, building inspection, transportation, human resources, collective bargaining, property management, public meetings, public records, ethics, and other general government issues.
The City Attorney represents the City’s interests before individuals, groups and agencies and must have trial experience. Responsibilities also include administering the department budget and providing direct supervision in work activities within the civil and criminal divisions.
Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate; member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona and the United States Federal Bar; five (5) years’ experience as a municipal, county or governmental law attorney in a supervisory or managerial position; five (5) years court litigation experience; and extensive knowledge of border corridor legal issues. Spanish fluency preferred.
Additional Salary Information: Commensurate to experience. Severance pay is negotiable.
