Senior Counsel, Payment Transaction Services
Overview MPTS Central is a world class global offering for issuer processing that provides a consolidated card management solution, as well as ATM driving and monitoring services. Mastercard's legal team is a critical part of our business, helping to drive the identification, development and distribution of products & solutions that meet the needs of our stakeholders and enable continued growth for our company and customers (a highly diverse group, including financial institutions, program managers and processors, and fintechs).
The ideal candidate is a curious, self-motivated, technology- and payments-minded attorney with transactional experience who can manage day-to-day legal support for executive level leadership, dynamic technologists and product developers. The candidate must demonstrate sound business and legal judgment, thrive in a fast-paced environment, with a diverse workload, and have a proven track record of providing pragmatic and proactive legal advice. The candidate must be able to engage at both the tactical and strategic level to support his or her internal clients.
This full-time role is based in St. Louis, Missouri and reports in to the Senior Managing Counsel for the Mastercard Payment Transaction Services business globally.
Role This role requires the provision of high quality advice to the business on a broad range of commercial, contractual and operational matters and other areas to help ensure the build, distribution and operations of the business comply with applicable laws and contractual commitments. Such activities include:
Partner with the product, technology, sales, compliance, marketing, communications and others to provide legal guidance related to the MPTS Central business unit and/or the broader markets, ensuring comprehensive, end-to-end legal support by facilitating thoughtful risk-taking to enable MasterCard to deliver on strategy.
Provide product legal guidance related to the development and distribution of new product offerings, including review of IP rights, information security protections, information technology considerations, regulatory compliance, data privacy design, documentation content, and vendor related requirements.
Manage tactical and strategic legal support related to our products and solutions to drive sustained scalable distribution, adoption and acceptance of our products & services both physical and digital payments and advance Mastercard's corporate objectives.
Work in collaboration with in-house and external specialists (including data protection, information security, regulatory, intellectual property, litigation, and competition law counsel) to identify relevant issues and help the business effectively navigate risk.
Structure, draft, and negotiate various agreements, including complex technology outsourcing agreements, with customers, strategic partners, and financial institutions.
Establish a thorough understanding of the business to operate as a trusted advisor to your business clients on a daily basis with respect to wide-ranging issues, to help set and implement strategy for such teams, take responsibility for projects that benefit the team or department, and manage the day to day matters in coordination with colleagues as appropriate.
"Own" relationships with various business teams to provide leadership including direct support, management and counsel to the business with respect to: o Review and approval of product constructs and associated product requirements, as well as sales and marketing materials, press releases and other internal and external communications o Legal and business risk assessment and analysis o Compliance with internal policies and applicable regulation o Management of external advisors within policy and budget o Resolution of customer issues and operational matters o Identification and protection of intellectual property rights o Training of sales and product teams.
Work collaboratively with various colleagues within our Global Businesses, MasterCard Operations & Technology, and regional organizations, including various subject matter experts to support the expansion of MPTS Central.
All About You
Significant legal experience, including expertise in processing or other outsourcing agreements, as well as technology law preferred; in-house, banking or card payments experience a plus.
In-house experience with a multinational corporation and experience working with colleagues and customers in multiple time zones and in a variety of cultures preferred.
Must have strong project management, interpersonal, collaborative, contract drafting, and client communication skills.
Must be flexible, solutions oriented and able to multi-task within tight timelines.
Must be able to work on highly complex legal issues of significant strategic importance and financial impact to Mastercard.
Must be able to work independently and demonstrate effective leadership and negotiation skills.
Qualified lawyer with a solid academic and training background.
