The South is experiencing a critical moment: there is not enough legal representation for immigrant communities. Immigration status determines whether immigrants have a right to remain in the United States and to live the lives they have built here alongside their families.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Atlanta is seeking an Immigration Paralegal to assist in a range of general legal services. Under the supervision of the Managing Immigration Attorney, the immigration paralegal will work within the Legal Services Department to carry out the following responsibilities and duties:
• Prepare legal documents for filings, including but not limited to motions, immigration forms, and applications for relief; • Research relevant rules,procedures, and case law; • Manage individual case files and comply with internal procedures for recordkeeping; • Manage client relations: conduct and assist in client intakes, maintain communication via email and phone calls, and manage schedule for video calls with detained clients; • Collect and review documents; • Conduct client and witness interviews; draft declarations and affidavits; • Assist the Program Associate with our free citizenship and DACA clinics, Know Your Rights Workshops, and community outreach; • Communicate with the government, court personnel, co-counsel, community partner organizations, etc.
• Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate; • Critical thinking, complex problem solving skills, attention to detail, ability to work well with others; • Excellent writing and communication skills; ability to take initiative,, multi-task, and work independently; • Proficiency with legal programs such as Westlaw and Lexis, desirable; • Fluency in Spanish or an Asian language (Vietnamese, Khmer, Arabic, etc.) required; • Ability to work well under pressure and with flexibility on some evenings and weekends; • Ability to set/change priorities according to deadline requirements; • A deep and demonstrated commitment to the cause of civil liberties and civil rights, preferred.
