The City of Sioux City is looking to hire an Assistant City Attorney II. The Assistant City Attorney II deals with serious and complicated aspects of the practice of law. Responsibilities include negotiation and trial primarily civil litigation, preparation of major contracts and documents, and litigation of labor matters; handles personnel issues including attending pre-disciplinary and grievance hearings; answers research and opinion requests from municipal departments including review of subpoenas issued to employees and/or departments; train law enforcement officers in civil liability and criminal and case law changes; reviews contracts, bid proposals and department policies; prepares, prosecutes or defends and tries jury and non-jury cases which include torts, civil rights actions, labor disputes, condemnations, workers compensation, administrative appeals and contract actions; determines whether or not a case should be tried; may direct Assistant City Attorney I in this activity.

Five years’ experience as an attorney with specialization in municipal law, graduation from a recognized law school, and admission to the Bar of the State of Iowa. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license or the ability to provide reliable transportation.
