The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel (OVPGC) serves as legal counsel for the University. We advise the Trustees and University Administration on all legal issues and serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving the University.
The Legal Fellow for Health Law Transactions position within the Office of the Vice President & General Counsel (OVPGC) is a unique opportunity offered to graduates of either the IU Maurer School of Law or the IU McKinney School of Law. The OVPGC has offices on both the Bloomington and IUPUI campuses. During the course of the fellowship, the Legal Fellow for Health Law Transactions will work closely with other attorneys in the OVPGC and with University clients directly to provide legal support primarily for the IU School of Medicine across its statewide system. The Legal Fellow for Health Law Transactions will be mentored and gain substantive experience in a number of areas, including copyright and trademark, student affairs, labor and employment law, institutional compliance, academic freedom and First Amendment issues, privacy, HIPAA, environmental law, information technology, health care law, contract drafting, review, and negotiation, and litigation management.
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) and licensed to practice law; OR have sat for the July Indiana bar exam. Employment is contingent on successful completion of the Indiana bar exam.
Ability to analyze and identify legal issues in a higher education setting and strong legal research skills. Ability to learn and stay current on the university's organization, policies, and practices, as well as trends and issues in higher education. Excellent communication skills including ability to effectively interact with University administration, faculty, and staff. Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to developing and maintaining effective work relationships.
J.D. received from the IU Maurer School of Law or the IU McKinney School of Law. Previous work experience in the OVPGC as an intern.
