Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy group in the country, is seeking an experienced, creative and ambitious litigator to serve as Director, Litigation Strategy and Trials, as part of Everytown's growing litigation team, Everytown Law. Everytown Law focuses on developing and implementing litigation strategies to: (1) challenge dangerous gun lobby-backed laws that conflict with other constitutional and statutory rights, (2) represent survivors of gun violence seeking accountability and reform of the gun industry’s dangerous business practices, (3) defend life-saving gun safety laws against Second Amendment and preemption challenges, and (4) enforce gun violence prevention laws that are not being implemented.
We are looking for a seasoned trial lawyer who wants to use their litigation skills and public-spirited ambitions to make a difference in the fight for the right of every American to be free from gun violence. Reporting to the Managing Director of Everytown Law and working out of the New York office, the primary responsibilities of the Director, Litigation Strategy and Trials, will be (1) sharing in the supervision of litigation at the trial court and appellate levels and (2) collaborating on Everytown Law’s overall strategy, case selection and development, and integration with broader organizational priorities. More generally, this person will be responsible for:
Working with the team to develop and implement Everytown Law’s federal and state court nationwide litigation practice.
Supervising and advising on a wide range of litigation and potential litigation, including strategy, case management, pleadings and brief editing, discovery, deposition and argument/hearing preparation, and trial preparation and trial.
Litigating cases in conjunction with national and local firms and city and county attorneys.
Collaborating with Everytown staff across all departments.
J.D. and membership in a state bar
12 or more years relevant litigation experience, including significant trial and in-court experience
Supervisory and case management experience
Clerkship a plus
Excellent research, writing, and editing skills and outstanding attention to detail, including an ability to explain complex legal concepts to both legal and non-legal audiences
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with other lawyers and non-lawyers
Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-moving environment and deliver timely and high-quality work
Strong work ethic, sense of humor, flexibility, creativity, and a professional demeanor
Ability to work in a sometimes-hectic, open plan office
