Argonne National Laboratory is searching for a talented Employment & Benefits Attorney.
The Employment & Benefits Attorney within the Legal department demonstrates a strong business partner mindset to deliver high quality representation, counsel, and advice to Laboratory management on all employment and benefit-related matters.
In this role you will:
Contribute functional employment law expertise to support business objectives and collaborate with Laboratory and University colleagues to manage risks.
Develop and implement strategies for providing accurate and timely guidance on a wide range of employment related issues, focusing on employee benefits, retirement plans, ERISA, HIPAA compliance, employment law, and (at times) data privacy issues.
Develop policies, guidelines and training materials in partnership with Human Resources and other Laboratory departments.
Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of employment related documents in support of Laboratory objectives.
Manage employment related claims, litigation and related matters including the retention and management of outside counsel or other experts.
Manage complex projects and matters from inception through resolution and implementation.
Deliver all legal services using a consultative and collaborative approach and model accountability and responsiveness by communicating proactively and meeting service commitments timely.
The Employment and Benefits Attorney will develop relationships across the Laboratory and University that enable them to be a true strategic partner to the Laboratory’s programmatic and operations divisions.
Maintain a focus on operational excellence in implementation of specific objectives supporting strategic initiatives.
Support special projects as assigned by the General Counsel including compliance, litigation management, reporting and other strategic projects.
The Benefits and Employment Attorney will protect the interests of the Laboratory and the University from potential legal cost exposure related to employee benefit plans and employment-related adverse claims.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Knowledge of the legal requirements governing employee benefit plans, including ERISA.
Knowledge of a broad range of employment –related legal issues including wage and hour and Title VII and labor relations.
Analytical skills and the ability to think through critical information and make informed recommendations in a thorough and well organized manner.
Skill in negotiation, client service and ability to interact effectively with Argonne personnel, take ownership of problems and drive issues to closure, manage and influence committees.
Skill in legal draftsmanship, ability to perform legal research, advocacy, or and written communications, and to manage and influence committees.
Skill in developing interpersonal relationships to effect compromises, to function under time constraints and pressure, and to recognize potential issues and make sound legal judgments.
Experience conducting training sessions and creating effective presentation materials.
Ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment, communicate effectively, drive tasks to closure, and focus on client service.
Working knowledge of HIPAA compliance, PII, PHI and data privacy issues.
Knowledge of general law and DOE Federal Contractor Laws and Regulations.
Experience in actively managing outside counsel.
The ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously and across various department and Laboratory silos.
Knowledge of Argonne`s organization structure, policies, procedures, and administrative systems.
Knowledge of the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FARs).
Steward of Lab resources.
