Office of Technology Development -manages the intellectual property portfolio of UMBC
The Assistant Director will work directly with technology and business development professionals and inventors to protect and commercialize inventions made as a result of the research conducted at UMBC.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Evaluate invention disclosures for patentability and commercial potential and make recommendations regarding the filing of patent applications;
Secure intellectual property protection by filing provisional applications, working with outside counsel to file and maintain utility and other types of applications and patents; and securing copyright protection for selected inventions;
Market active invention disclosures and work with early stage start-up companies commercializing such inventions;
Draft, negotiate and execute license agreements for UMBC technologies, non-disclosure, material transfer, and other agreements related to research containing intellectual property provisions;
Manage the OTD Technology Catalyst Fund proposal and award process
Interact with faculty to identify inventions, promote the technology transfer process, provide advice and counsel on intellectual property issues associated with research, and promote internal and external funding opportunities for technology development;
Supervise OTD staff in the Director’s absence;
Manage student interns and interactions with other campus offices; and
Other duties assigned by the Director.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in a physical/ computer science or engineering or IT and JD from a law school accredited by the Association of American Law Schools.
Five (5) years experience in drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications.
Registered US patent attorney in good standing before the USPTO.
Experience with commercialization and related agreements in an academic technology transfer setting or similar experience in technology transfer gained in industry or government; and familiarity with sponsored research, compliance and related agreements and transactional experience related to start-ups.
