DUTIES: The Department of Health Information Management at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Medical Records Assistant. The successful candidate will: - Have strong electronic system experience, good interpersonal skills necessary to address physician and staff. - Report to the supervisor of the correspondence area. - Assist with special projects. - Be responsible for the release of medical information to insurance companies and lawyers. - Be responsible for timely processing of subpoenas from the courts and Social Security Administration. - Verifiy authorizations in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and state and federal laws. - Be responsible for scheduling appointments for review of records by attorney, auditors, patients, etc. - Respond promptly to all telephone, fax and walk-in inquiries, Department of Health and other hospital request for medical information. - Will be cross-trained in all HIM functions. - Utilize the following systems: Alpha Scanning System, Healthbridge Electronic, Medical Record, 3M Chart Tracking System, OmniMD and Verisma. - Ensure strict adherence to security and confidentiality guidelines of HIPPA. - Duties and responsibilities are not limited to the described tasks above, employee maybe required to perform other related tasks. (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION) QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: - A minimum of one (1) year of experience in Health Information Management and a comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology. - Familiarity with HIPPA, Federal and State Laws. - Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. PREFERRED: - An Associate Degree with two (2) years of related work experience in a healthcare environment, preferably in Health Information Management.
