The Senior Attorney will join a growing, innovative medical clinic-based practice serving low-income patients-clients (and their families) throughout Eastern Queens and Nassau County. The Hofstra|Northwell Medical-Legal Partnership (“MLP) is a collaboration between Hofstra Law School and Northwell Health. Together, these organizations advance a patient-centric healthcare delivery model that unites its collective medical, legal, social and academic resources for a high-need, under-resourced population. By embedding legal service providers directly into the Northwell Health medical team at clinics across Nassau and Queens Counties, the MLP seeks to eliminate the structural legal barriers standing in the way of underserved patients receiving timely, effective legal, social, medical and behavioral health care.
Reporting to the Legal Director of the Medical-Legal Partnership, the Senior Attorney will practice approximately 4 days per week on-site at three of Northwell Health’s medical clinics in Eastern Queens and Nassau County. Additionally, the Senior Attorney will work approximately one day per week off-site handling casework and supervising a practicum for Hofstra Law School students. The Senior Attorney’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
•Maintain a caseload of medical-legal partnership client representation which will include landlord/tenant actions that flow from the MLP's work in the clinics; this will include eviction defense and affirmative litigation;
•Maintain a caseload of medical-legal partnership clients to help them obtain the safety net benefits to which they are legally entitled;
•Work with elder clients on specific legal issues facing older patients;
•Work collaboratively with other medical-legal partnership attorneys as well as Northwell Health physicians, residents, patient navigators and social workers to ensure that client health, social and legal needs are met;
•Support the design and development of training, community outreach, and educational materials to clients, medical and legal students, and Northwell Health physicians, residents, faculty and staff;
•Work with Hofstra Law School faculty to conduct policy advocacy, including advocacy before legislative, administrative, and judicial bodies to advance the interests of clients;
•The Senior Attorney will receive assistance from law students who will practice under the supervision of the Senior Attorney.
