Professor of Lawyering Skills and Assistant Director of Academic Support Program (Open Rank)
USC Gould School of Law seeks applications for a full-time Professor of Lawyering Skills, who will also serve as the Assistant Director of Academic Support, beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. The position is an open rank, and we may hire a full, associate, or assistant professor depending on experience.
Primary responsibilities include teaching and working with students in the law school’s Academic Support Program. Professor of Lawyering Skills is a year-round RTPC (non-tenure track) position.
The successful candidate will: (1) co-teach (along with the Director of Academic Support) a fall ASP class, Legal Analysis of Evidence; (2) regularly meet individually with students and counsel them regarding academic, analytical, and study skills; (3) help to hire, supervise, and train Peer Tutors, upper division students who work with first-year students; (4) conduct workshops for students on legal writing and other topics; and (5) assist in curriculum and program development for ASP. The successful candidate will also teach one or more spring-semester classes, which will be chosen in consultation with Gould’s Academic Dean.
Gould anticipates making final hiring decisions by June 2020.
A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school, and prior academic-support experience or teaching experience.
The Assistant Director of Academic Support must have excellent oral and written communication skills with strong attention to detail; excellent writing and editing abilities; sound legal skills and knowledge; an affinity for counseling and mentoring students; strong interpersonal skills; strong public-speaking skills; and excellent time-management and organizational skills. A solid working knowledge of basic computer systems is also important. The position requires the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse environment and the ability to work well as a member of a team and independently. Relevant teaching experience (e.g., legal writing) and experience as a practicing attorney are preferred.
