The Ohio State University's General Counsel is designated as the chief legal advisor for the University, Board of Trustees and University officers and administrators with overall responsibility for the vision and leadership of Ohio State's legal strategy. This position also carries the designation of Assistant Attorney General of the State of Ohio. Accordingly, the successful candidate must be approved by the Office of the Ohio Attorney General prior to hire.
In addition to leading and managing the Office of Legal Affairs in this highly complex organization, the General Counsel will provide strategic advice and guidance to the President of the University and the Board of Trustees, as well as partner closely with the State of Ohio's Attorney General (AG) and the AG's office, and at times work closely with other State officials. The General Counsel will be a strategic thinker and have experience managing, directing, and coordinating the work of other attorneys and overseeing substantial budgets and operations. The General Counsel will report to both the President of the University and the Board of Trustees.

The General Counsel will have the following responsibilities and opportunities:
Serve as a strategic thought partner and advisor to the President, Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership on institutional objectives and priorities, as well as work closely with the Board of Trustees on all governance matters.
Oversee the Office of University Compliance and Integrity and provide guidance as needed as it relates to compliance matters.
Provide strategic and ethical leadership and direction for all legal matters involving the University, including student, faculty and staff affairs; regulatory and compliance issues; athletics; research and financial concerns; as well as all matters that uniquely impact a public institution of higher education.
Lead, manage and oversee legal matters pertaining to the operation of Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center.
Lead, manage and oversee all attorneys and professionals within the Office of Legal Affairs with an eye towards growth and development opportunities and maintaining and enhancing the manner in which legal services are provided to ensure high caliber work.
Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Office of Legal Affairs will: oManage all litigation matters involving the University; oReview, advise and assist with legal matters pertaining to Ohio State Athletics; oReview, advise and assist with legal documents, contracts, policies, procedures or any legal matter pertaining to the management and operation of the University; oReview judicial decisions, legislative or governmental regulatory developments, and recommend compliance procedures or strategies; oReview, advise and assist with property acquisitions, leases, labor relations and personnel matters, insurance matters, patent, trademark and copyright matters; oAdvise and assist with compliance reviews by governmental agencies, higher education regulatory agencies and internal audits; oAssist the President and other administrative officers to identify and implement programs and strategies that will provide comprehensive and preventative legal guidance to University personnel; oWork with internal committees concerned with the formulation and enforcement of University Rules and Policies, including the various student disciplinary forums; oMonitor the cost of legal services to the University, take appropriate action to minimize that cost, and work with the Office of Business and Finance to budget such expenses.
Serve as the chief liaison regarding legal matters with University affiliated organizations, such as the Ohio State University Foundation, University Affiliates, etc.
Maintain contact with counsel at other Universities of the State and in State government regarding legal questions and issues of mutual interest.
Work closely with the Chief of the Education Section within the Office of the Attorney General, keeping that individual informed of all pending legal matters at the University.
Maintain the professional qualifications for appointment as Assistant Attorney General of the State of Ohio; and provide general legal counsel and advice as set forth by law and in accordance with the professional standards established by the Ohio Attorney General, and in accordance with the Ohio Code of Professional Responsibility.
Coordinate the provision of legal counsel, advice and services for the University with the Ohio Attorney General, special counsel appointed by the Ohio Attorney General, and provide appropriate liaison with the bench, bar and law enforcement.
